Sībiàn / Thinking in Braids (2023 )

In Taoist belief, knots hold many meanings.
At my cousin’s funeral, I was the eldest ,the only one permitted to lead the incense offering.
She used to braid her hair.
I tied braids and Vajra knots onto the incense sticks, sending my thoughts through the flame and smoke, wishing her peace in another space.

In Mandarin, sībiàn (思辨) means to contemplate, but it sounds the same as sībiàn (思辮) which means “thinking in braids.”
Between these two tones of thought and thread, I find myself questioning:
if gods or spirits exist at all, or if I am only speaking to air.

Facing the sea, I bow and whisper to no one, but keep a space for her.
a dialogue with absence, a ritual of uncertainty.
