500f adopts a painting-within-painting structure to respond to the academy’s discipline of form as value. Labeled as “No. 500” yet in fact only a “ 100”oversized drawing, it collapses downward, flattening the instructor within image.
This drawing reenacts the events in my mind: portraying an authoritative figure, feigning adherence to prescribed formats and requirements, while using those very standards to turn back against authority.
I deliberately employ materials such as pencil and wood panel ,often dismissed as merely preparatory ,to elevate them into the protagonists of the narrative. What appears compliant becomes a lever for dismantling the system.
The twisted bodies and repeated spectral outlines in the composition suggest the growth of both obedience and deviation under the weight of rubrics, grading, and expectation.
When looking itself becomes evaluation, and materials become indicators, if the artist can only smuggle subversion through feigned compliance, then where else can they exist?
